11.4.4 Leakage flows
An almost inevitable problem with by-pass systems, as with most steam systems, is leakage flows. Leaks from valves reduce the efficiency of the plant, so valves are designed to be as secure from leaks as possible.
During the life of the plant, leaks are likely to occur, but are kept in check with regular maintenance. Taking all these considerations into account ensures a safe, efficient and reliable system which provides flexibility between the boiler/reactor and turbine conditions.
