12.3   Forced-air cooling

The purpose of forced-air cooling of the main turbine is to allow the machine to be taken off barring in the shortest possible time, thus enabling maintenance work to be carried out as soon as possible after unloading the unit. Forced-air cooling greatly reduces outage times; typically, with the use of forced-air cooling, a machine can be removed from barring within about 20-25 h of coming off-load. This compares with times of 90-120 h when employing natural cooling.
