6 Mechanical design
Present day power station steam turbines require very large condensers: the basic problems are those associated with translating conceptual ideas into functional mechanical designs.
As already discussed in previous sections, the disposition of condensers has largely been influenced by the generic development of turbines. This has made it impractical to specify a unique set of design rules which will completely cover the diversity in constructional designs. However, there are many features common to all designs, and these will be discussed in detail with reference, where applicable, to relevant design codes, standards and specifications.
