6.3.2 Condenser tube cleaning system
Figure 4.29 shows how oversized rubber balls are continuously pressed through the condenser tubes by the water flow. Screens located downstream of the condenser waterboxes extract the balls from the main CW discharge flow. They are then drawn off and pumped through a collector to be subsequently discharged into the CW inlet to the condenser.
This system removes fouling and even hard deposits from the internal surface of the tubes, which would otherwise lower the heat transfer characteristics of the tubes, with a resulting loss in condenser efficiency.
